TACshift: features, advantages and disadvantages

TACshift (Touch Activated Control) is a manual shift function for automatic transmissions , first installed in the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix G-Force concept car. It also appeared on some versions of the Pontiac Grand Prix production model. It was later renamed TAPshift.

How TACshift works

The GM 4T65E hydro-automatic transmission with electronic control was developed with the TACshift system fitted. In automatic mode, the driver can choose between a few settings. In manual mode, shifting is possible with the shift paddles marked with “+” and “-“.

Frequent defects

  • The bearings wear out over time.
  • The clutch drums have a short lifespan.
  • The bushings and drive chain wear out quickly.
  • The solenoid valves become dirty if the transmission oil is not changed in time.
